What Are Anti-Wrinkle Injections?

Anti-wrinkle injections use a purified form of botulinum toxin to gently relax the small muscles in your face that are responsible for forming expression lines. When it’s injected into a targeted muscle, it works by blocking the nerve signals that tell that muscle to contract. Without that signal, the muscle can no longer tighten as forcefully as it used to, which allows the overlying skin to relax and the lines and creases caused by repeated movement to soften.

It’s a common misconception to lump anti-wrinkle injections in with dermal fillers, but they work in completely different ways. Fillers add volume beneath the skin to plump out hollows or fill in static lines. Anti-wrinkle injections don’t add any volume at all – instead, they ease the muscle activity that is causing the line to form in the first place. That’s why they’re so effective on the lines that appear when you frown, smile or raise your eyebrows.

So what actually causes these lines to appear in the first place? It’s a combination of factors, but the two biggest contributors are the natural ageing process and cumulative sun damage. As we age, our skin produces less collagen and elastin, making it thinner and less able to spring back after repeated muscle movement. Sun exposure accelerates this process significantly, breaking down those same supportive fibres over time – often more than people realise, since the effects build up gradually over years.

The good news is that because anti-wrinkle injections target the underlying muscle movement rather than just the surface of the skin, they offer a genuinely effective way to soften the lines that have already formed, while also easing the repeated movement that causes new ones to deepen. The result is a smoother, more relaxed and naturally refreshed appearance, without looking like you’ve had anything “done.”

Which Areas Can Be Treated?

Anti-wrinkle injections are wonderfully versatile and can be used across several areas of the face, depending on which lines are bothering you most. The most commonly treated areas are frown lines between the brows, horizontal forehead lines, and crow’s feet at the outer corners of the eyes. We can also soften bunny lines across the bridge of the nose, smooth chin dimples, and ease smokers’ lines around the mouth, particularly where the corners of the lips tend to turn downward.

Beyond these classic areas, anti-wrinkle injections have become popular for a number of more subtle, sculpting uses too. A “lip flip” can gently relax the muscle around the upper lip to create a fuller, slightly curled appearance without adding any volume. We can also use small, precise doses to create a delicate brow lift, giving the eyes a more open and lifted look, or to slim a heavier jawline by relaxing an overactive jaw muscle. For clients concerned about the appearance of vertical neck bands, we can soften these too, helping the neck look smoother and more refreshed.

What Can I Expect?

Depending on how many areas you’re having treated, the appointment itself typically takes somewhere between two and ten minutes. There’s no need to set aside a big chunk of your day – many clients pop in on their lunch break and head straight back to their normal routine afterwards.

We use a very fine needle to deliver the injections, and most people are pleasantly surprised by how comfortable the treatment is. Discomfort is minimal, and the most common description we hear is that it feels like a quick scratch or a small pinch, over almost as soon as it begins. Afterwards, you might notice a little redness or small bumps at the injection sites, but these tend to settle within a short time. There’s no downtime required, so you’re free to get on with your day as normal, just bearing in mind the simple aftercare guidance below.

Results & How Long Do They Last?

Patience is the name of the game with anti-wrinkle injections – they don’t work instantly. Most people start to notice the muscles softening anywhere from three to fourteen days after treatment, with the full effect settling in by around the two-week mark. Once they’ve taken hold, results typically last around three to four months, though this varies a little from person to person depending on individual muscle strength and metabolism.

Many of our clients find that with regular, repeated treatment, results begin to last progressively longer over time, as the treated muscles gradually “learn” to relax. This is also where the idea of preventative anti-wrinkle treatment comes in – starting treatment in your late twenties or thirties, before deep lines have had the chance to set in, can help keep your skin looking smoother and more youthful for longer. By easing off the repeated muscle movement early, you’re helping to prevent those lines from becoming etched into the skin over time, rather than simply treating them once they’ve already formed.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Anti-wrinkle injections are suitable for most healthy adults who’d like to soften the appearance of expression lines, or who simply want to take a preventative approach before lines become more established. Whether you’re looking to address frown lines that have started to bother you, or you’re simply curious about getting ahead of the ageing process, this treatment offers a flexible, low-commitment way to do so.

That said, the treatment isn’t suitable for everyone. It shouldn’t be carried out during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and it’s not appropriate for clients with certain neuromuscular conditions. Aftercare

Looking after the treated area properly in the first 24 hours helps the product settle exactly where it’s needed and supports the best possible results. Please follow this simple guidance after your appointment:

• Try to avoid lying down flat for around 4 hours after your treatment, to help prevent the product migrating away from the treated area.
• Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours, as raising your heart rate and body temperature too soon can affect how the product settles.
• Avoid touching, rubbing or massaging the treated area for 24 hours, so the product stays exactly where it has been placed.
• Avoid drinking alcohol for 24 hours following your treatment, as it can increase the risk of bruising and swelling.
