Dermal Filler & Tear Trough

Dermal Facial Filler is a soft tissue gel injected into the desired area of the face, made up of hyaluronic acid, to help fill in facial wrinkle lines and give a smoother looking appearance. Dermal fillers are temporary as the body gradually absorbs the gel.

What is Tear Trough Filler?

The tear trough is the area directly beneath your eyes, where the skin is thinnest and most delicate anywhere on the face. Over time, or sometimes from birth, this area can develop a hollow, shadowed appearance that makes you look tired, drawn, or older than you feel – even when you are perfectly well-rested. Tear trough filler is a dermal filler treatment designed specifically to address this hollowing, using a fine hyaluronic acid gel to gently restore the volume that has been lost.

By carefully replacing lost volume in this precise area, tear trough filler softens the shadow that creates the appearance of dark circles and smooths the transition between your lower eyelid and cheek. The result is a refreshed, brighter-eyed look that genuinely reflects how rested and well you feel, rather than working against it.

We want to be honest with you about this treatment: tear trough filler is widely regarded as one of the most delicate and technically demanding filler treatments available. The skin here is thin, the underlying anatomy is intricate, and there is very little room for error. This is not a treatment where you should ever compromise on practitioner experience – it genuinely requires real skill, a thorough understanding of facial anatomy, and a gentle, conservative approach to achieve a natural result.

At Skin Rejuvenation Clinic, this is exactly the level of care and expertise we bring to every tear trough consultation and treatment, so you can feel confident putting this delicate area in safe, experienced hands.

The Filler We Use

For the tear trough area, we use a premium, very fine hyaluronic acid filler that has been specifically formulated for use in thin, delicate under-eye skin. This is not the same product or consistency we might use to add volume to the cheeks or jawline – the skin under your eyes behaves very differently, so the filler needs a softer, lighter density that integrates smoothly without creating lumps, visible texture, or a bluish discolouration under the skin.

Hyaluronic acid is a substance your body already produces naturally, which is why these fillers are biocompatible, safe, and well-tolerated by the vast majority of clients. Another reassurance for a first-time filler treatment in this sensitive area is that hyaluronic acid fillers are reversible – if for any reason an adjustment is ever needed, the filler can be dissolved.

Because the under-eye skin is so thin and the surrounding structures so delicate, we use a careful, precise, and conservative injection technique, placing tiny amounts of product exactly where they are needed. This unhurried, considered approach is central to achieving the soft, natural-looking result this area deserves.

What Can I Expect?

A tear trough filler appointment typically takes around 30 minutes from start to finish, making it easy to fit around a busy day. Before any injecting begins, a numbing cream is applied to the under-eye area to keep you as comfortable as possible – this is especially important here, given how sensitive this part of the face is.

Your practitioner will then use a slow, gentle technique to place the filler with precision, checking your results from multiple angles as they go to ensure a balanced, natural outcome on both sides. Many clients notice an immediate visible reduction in shadowing and hollowness as soon as the treatment is complete.

It is worth knowing in advance that mild swelling or bruising is more common in the tear trough area than in other parts of the face, simply because the skin here is so thin and delicate. This is entirely normal and nearly always settles quickly, but we will always talk you through what to expect so there are no surprises afterwards.

Results & How Long Do They Last?

You will usually see a visible improvement in under-eye hollowing immediately after your treatment, with the filler continuing to settle into place over the following two weeks as any initial swelling fully resolves. This settling period is when the final, refined result becomes apparent.

Tear trough filler typically lasts between 9 and 12 months, though this can vary from person to person. This is generally a little shorter-lived than filler placed in areas like the cheeks or jawline, simply because the tear trough area moves constantly with blinking and facial expression, and the skin here is thinner and metabolises filler more quickly.

To keep your results looking consistently soft and refreshed, we recommend a top-up treatment once you notice the effect beginning to fade, rather than waiting until the hollowing has fully returned. Your practitioner will give you personalised guidance on timing based on how your body responds.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Tear trough filler tends to suit you particularly well if you struggle with persistent dark circles or hollows under the eyes that are not simply down to lack of sleep, or if you have noticed age-related volume loss gradually changing the area beneath your eyes. If you find yourself looking tired no matter how much rest you get, this is often a sign that volume loss, rather than fatigue, is the real cause.

Because this is such a sensitive and visible area of the face, we place huge importance on an in-depth, honest consultation before any treatment goes ahead. During this consultation, your practitioner will carefully assess your skin quality, the depth and cause of your hollowing, and any factors – such as the Tyndall effect, where filler placed too superficially can create a visible blue-grey tinge under thin skin – that need to be considered to achieve a safe, natural-looking result.

If you are also interested in addressing other areas of the face, our dermal filler range covers a number of complementary treatments, including Nasolabial Folds, Jaw Fillers, Lips, Chin, and Cheeks, and your consultation is a great opportunity to discuss whether combining treatments would benefit your overall results.

Aftercare

Caring for the delicate under-eye area properly after your treatment helps your results settle beautifully and keeps any side effects to a minimum. Your practitioner will talk you through full aftercare guidance before you leave, and the key points are below.

  • Avoid touching, rubbing, or applying pressure to the treated area for at least 24–48 hours, to allow the filler to settle undisturbed.
  • Steer clear of strenuous exercise, alcohol, and excessive heat (saunas, hot baths, sunbeds) for 24–48 hours, as these can increase swelling and bruising.
  • Mild swelling or bruising is more visible in this thin-skinned area than elsewhere on the face – a cold compress, held gently against the area for short periods, can help calm this and keep you comfortable.
  • If you have any questions or concerns at any point during your recovery, please contact the clinic – we are always happy to check in and reassure you.
